Threespine stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus), long a model for studying behavior, ecology and evolution, is emerging as a prominent model micro-evo-devo system. Research on stickleback over the last decade has begun to address the genetic basis of morphological variation and sex determination, and much of this work has important implications for understanding the genetics of speciation.

Across its Holarctic range, marine stickleback have repeatedly invaded and adapted to freshwater environments, which has resulted in the parallel evolution of many traits. The three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a thumb-sized fish distributed across the Northern hemisphere, is a textbook model species in evolutionary biology. With the retreat of ice Regressive evolution of the pelvic complex in stickleback fishes: a study of convergent evolution. Specifically, scientists are able to identify DNA changes that control skeletal adaptations in wild populations of sticklebacks through a series of simple experiments that would surely thrill even Darwin himself.

Novel genes can be created, for example, by duplication of large genomic regions or de novo, from previously non-coding DNA. Either way, creation of a novel transcript is an essential … STICKLEBACK EVOLUTION Three-spine sticklebacks are small fish that live in oceans, streams, and lakes across the northern hemisphere. Sticklebacks that live in freshwater lakes often look quite different from their ocean-dwelling cousins.
